Kunekunes (pronounced Kooney-kooney) are a miniature breed of swine hailing from New Zealand. Their name literally means, "fat-fat" in the native Maori tongue; and an apt name it is, since these are a heritage breed of lard pig. Kunes look slightly different from any other breed of pig due to their short, upturned snout, huge ears, and generous amount of hair. They act very different, too-- when we first got Kunekunes in 2016, we were concerned that they were not feeling well because of their laid back attitude about... well... EVERYTHING! Even to some extent, FOOD! We came to know in time that they were feeling just fine, indeed they were thriving! They're just that laid back and easy going, which makes them ideal for smaller acreage, whether you are looking for a pet, breeding stock, or high quality pasture raised pork. Because they've been bred for generations for the ability to graze, they thrive on pasture with minimal input. We use ours to clean up underneath the trees we have on property- apple, pear, hickory, oak, and walnuts are all delicious to them! A correct temperament from them seeks out human contact and attention; we breed for correct temperament first, followed by correct conformation. Meet our breeding stock:
Clementine Oh my darlin', Clementine. She earns her name by how sweet she is, she's a lovebug. She's a beautiful ginger and black swallowbelly. She is a small sow, weighing approximately 140 lbs at 2-1/2 years old. She has an extremely correct face, with short, upturned snout, medium jowls, very large erect ears, and two firmly attached wattles. She also has a nice tail set and short, strong pasterns. Check out our for sale page for pictures of her gorgeous piglets; she is an excellent first time mum. Yes, she's flopped without even touching her in most of these pictures; she often flops at your approach because she's already anticipating the belly rub she's sure you've come to give her!
Ice Cream Sundae Sundae is the full sister of Clementine, and is similarly very correct in her head structure.
